Room 204 [afternoon]

Ben was on his way to find Ender, fresh from a few hours of lightsaber practice, when his comlink went off.

As a general rule, his comlink went off several times a day, but this time he had a bad feeling about it even before he turned it on. "Hello?"

There was silence on his end as he listened to his Jaina's clipped rundown of how things had ended on Nam Chorios.

"He'll survive?" he finally asked softly.

She confirmed that.

"Okay," he said. "I'll be there as soon as I can book a portal."

He clicked the comlink off and closed his eyes, taking a few steadying breaths. First he had to find Ender.

Ender

Ender was in his room, going through - what else - incoming data with Jane murmuring information into his ear. He looked intent - focused, even, at the desk with frown lines marking his forehead.

Ben

"Hey," Ben said softly. "Mind if we move the timetable for visiting home to, um, now?"

Ender

Ender's head shot up. "What happened?" he asked.

Ben

"Dad's floating in bacta because he flew too close to a shadow bomb detonating in space," Ben replied, sighing. "It sheared off the wings of the StealthX."

Ender

Ender shut his laptop. "Is he going to be all right?" he asked, getting up onto his feet.

Ben

Ben nodded once. "Jaina said something about it being a good thing to happen since Dad's needed a bacta bath since the Maw."

Ender

"You're telling me," Ender said. "It's frankly a miracle he's held together for this long."

Ben

"Pretty much," Ben admitted with a small sigh, leaning in for a hug.

Ender

Ender slid his arms around Ben readily, giving him a tight squeeze. "I'll start packing in a minute," he promised. "Where are we headed? Coruscant?"

Ben

"I think so," Ben said. "Jaina said she'd call with more information when she had some. I'm not sure if Dad's coming all the way in from the Outer Rim, but Coruscant seems like a good place to start.."

Ender

Ender gave that a shallow nod. He tilted his head and kissed Ben on the cheek. "He's safe right now," he said, "Moreso than he's been in a while. Everything else, we can figure out."

Ben

"I'll call Portalocity," Ben said. "You want to leave the usual messages?"

It was sad they had a usual messages list.

Ender

"Sure," Ender said, breaking the hug so he could reach into his pocket and fish out his phone. "We don't have a real time frame for when this'll be over, right?"

Ben

Ben shook his head. "Not really. We'll be back before your ship takes off?"

Ender

Ender nodded curtly - this wasn't the time for a conversation about whether Ben would be coming along if the situation was still dire by the time the ship took off. That would come if it was needed. "That'll be fine," he said, calling up the voicemail screen on his phone.

Ben

Ben leaned in to kiss Ender's forehead. "Thank you, kreetle," he murmured.

Ender

"Thank me when we're done with this mess," Ender said quietly.

Whatever happened, this was not going to be fun.
