Ye Olde Preserve [after Flight Club]

Ben had missed the clarity that came from fighting something that wasn't somehow linked back to the reeking mess that his family had become.

These things...were just reeking messes. He planted his feet, ignited his lightsaber, and began storing away the insults the harpies were shrieking.

"This is going to be fun," he said, grinning over at Tahiri.

Ben had a strange idea of fun.

"Definitely messier." Tahiri stuck out a hand and sent a harpy's thrown -- was that an egg? Apparently, since it splattered when she sent it back. "Fun, but I don't think I'm kissing you until after you get a shower."

She was not exactly a paragon of cleanliness herself at the moment. This flightsuit might have to get burned later.

Ben wrinkled up his nose at her and wiped her arm across his forehead.

That didn't improve anything.

"I didn't want to be kissed anyway," he said.

Tahiri gave him a look. "Uh huh -- yipes, look out!"

Ben hit the dirt again. "Stang!"

"Hey!" Tahiri swung wildly at the harpy and thought she scored a minor hit, but ended up diving to the ground next to Ben when another one came in low and snapped at her with its beak.

"I'm getting tired of these," Ben complained, rolling onto his back and shoving his lightsaber through the harpy's head.

Which could've been planned better, as the harpy then landed on top of him.

"Ick."

"Ew," Tahiri groaned; that was more up close and personal with a dead harpy than she wanted to get, and she shoved at it with her hands and the Force, because gross. "I've smelled better things than this, lots of times."

"I'm willing to bet Dad smelled better than this coming out of a taun-taun," Ben bitched.

If Tahiri had been a mess before she hit the ground, she was a disaster zone now as she got back to her feet and reached out to help Ben up. "This might be the worst smelling thing ever in my book right now."

It wasn't, in the grand scheme of things, but at the moment? Yes. Definitely.

Ben looked up at the sky. "Leave some for other people?" he suggested. "Hit the showers before we smell like this forever?"

"We can't have all the fun, can we?" Tahiri agreed, still looking pretty thoroughly disgusted. "I am definitely burning these clothes later."

"Definitely," Ben agreed. "Maybe the boots too. My feet are squelching, and that's disgusting."

"I'm wishing I'd kept mine on," Tahiri lamented. "This is so, so, gross."

Ben reached over to sling his arm around her shoulder, on the theory that they really couldn't get grubbier. "It is."

Oh, well, if he was going to do that, Tahiri was going to put her arm around his waist. Squelchiness and all. "But good practice for . . . something."

"Being stuck on a planet without a shower for months?" Ben asked.

". . . yes," Tahiri decided. "So, have fun?"

He grinned. "Yes. It's nice to fight something without having to weigh all of the consequences."

"No politics, no endless bickering about the morality of it, no having to anticipate the next five moves," Tahiri agreed with obvious relief. "I think I like doing this with you."

"I like doing this with you, too," he said. "Um, not that I'm an incredibly violent person or something."

"You're Ben," Tahiri said, as if that summed it up for her. "You need to do things like this every now and then."

"And they started it," Ben declared. "They didn't have to throw things and insult people and try to eat us."

"They could have sent an envoy or something first," Tahiri agreed. "Instead of just showing up in a huge horde and deciding they liked the island and were just going to stick around."

Wow, that sounded kind of familiar somehow.

He gave her a wry smile. "At least the Yuuzhan Vong--" he'd noticed her correction, yes, "--don't through poodoo?"

He got a grateful smile from her for noticing the correction, yes.

"I think that might be the only thing they don't," Tahiri said, considering. "And I think I appreciate that, now. Ugh, I'm going to need to spend at least an hour in the shower."
