"I'll start running comparisons soon," Ender said, touching his face.

Then he kissed the top of Val's head. "How would you like to have a brother, sweetheart?"

"No," Val said very clearly.

Ben burst out laughing.

"Too bad," Ender said cheerfully, patting her on the shoulder. "Get used to the idea."

"Cake?" Val asked. "Moooooore cake? Please?"

"You have to pace yourself, Val," Ender said. "At least ten minutes without cake."

Val gave him a horrified look in response.

"Guess she didn't like that," Ben said, chuckling. "Just wait until we're in walking distance of the ice cream shop again."

Ender laughed softly. "Just ten minutes," he repeated. He switched on a nearby datapad, and pointed at the time. "You see that number?" he said, his finger hovering over the second to last number. "When it changes, you can have more cake."

"Daddy NO," Val said, glaring at Ben and his cake. "Waiting."

Ben looked at Ender. "I don't think this applied to me."

"It does now," Ender said sagely. "Sorry."

Ben made a face at him. "No fair," he teased.

"It'll be good for you to practice patience every now and again," Ender said, grinning.

"Well, yes, but I didn't want to practice patience right now," Ben said, kissing Ender's cheek.

"You never do, love," Ender said fondly. He pointed at his watch. "We're almost there."

Ben smiled. "I'm glad to hear it. It's good cake."

"The people at the bakery did good," Ender said, laughing softly. "We should thank them."

"On our way out tomorrow," Ben said, nodding.

Ender smiled softly. "It's been a nice few months out here," he said. "I'm glad I let you talk me into staying longer."

Even if he was starting to itch again.

Ben kissed him softly. "Thank you for staying."

"I like seeing you happy," Ender said quietly. "And Val enjoys it."

His hand brushed through Val's hair.

"Cake," Val informed them.

Ben laughed. "And we'll do a summer in Fandom, then off again on another adventure."

Ender nodded. "I'll lay out our options when we get to Fandom," he said.

He held his datapad up for Val. "Has the number changed?"

"Yes," Val said, nodding hard.

"She's been very patient," Ben added.

"Then you can have cake," Ender said solemnly, slicing off another chunk and putting it down in front of her.

"Cake!" Val said joyously, digging in.

"Well, she only turns one once," Ben said with a fond grin. "Can't believe it's gone by so quickly."

"Just another seventeen left to go and she'll be running away from us," Ender said dryly.
